NOTE
The following is applicable to ATV RiderCourses that are available thru a program administered by the All Terrain Vehicle Association of Nova Scotia (ATVANS).
ATV RiderCourse applicants under the age of 18 must have the written consent of a parent or their legal guardian. The parent or legal guardian must sign the Participant Waiver form prior to course commencement.
A child who had his/her 6th birthday but has not had his/her 12th birthday can apply for and participate in an ATV RiderCourse, if the following conditions are met:
1 A parent or legal guardian provides consent in writing.
2 He/she uses an ATV that is rated at less than 70cc during the course.
3 The class size is limited to a maximum of four participants (not including attending adults) and the class does not contain a participant who is 12 years of age or older.
4 A parent, guardian or other responsible adult (one for each participant) is in attendance while the course is being conducted.
A youth who had his/her 12th birthday but has not had his/her 16th birthday can apply for and participate in an ATV RiderCourse, if the following conditions are met:
1 A parent or legal guardian provides consent in writing.
2 He/she uses an ATV that is rated at not more than 90cc during the course.
3 The class size is limited to a maximum of six participants (may include participants who are 16 years of age and older).
The Nova Scotia OHV Act states that a parent or the legal guardian, of children between the ages of 6 and 15 who operates an ATV, must have completed an ATV RiderCourse and be in possession of a valid ATV Safety Training Certificate.
It also states that children between the ages of 6 and 13 can only drive on a closed course, and then only while driving the right size ATV and under direct supervision of a parent/legal guardian who has a valid ATV Safety Training Certificate. An exception is when an instructor is supervising them during training.
It is not necessary for the consenting parent/legal guardian of children/youths between the age of six and fifteen to have an ATV Safety Training Certificate before their sons/daughters participate in an ATV RiderCourse.
It is recommended a parent/legal guardian of a child between the ages of 6 and 11 obtain the required ATV Safety Training Certificate prior to enrolling the child in an ATV RiderCourse.
It is recommended a parent or legal guardian of a child between the age of 12 and 15 obtain an ATV Safety Training Certificate by enrolling in the same ATV RiderCourse as their child.
Any individual who is 16 years of age or older can apply for and participate in an ATV RiderCourse, if the following conditions are met:
Applicants under the age of 18 have the written consent of a parent or their legal guardian.
The current cost of an ATV RiderCourse under this program is $100.00 per participant.
The appropriate sized ATVANS’ owned ATV may be available, for children and youths who have had their sixth birthday but have not had their sixteenth birthday, at a nominal cost per participant. The request for the use of an ATV must be made when applying for an ATV RiderCourse. The age of the child/youth must be identified to ensure the correct size ATV is provided.
It is recommended that you become a member of an ATV Club that is affiliated with and includes a membership in the All Terrain Vehicle Association of Nova Scotia (ATVANS). ATVANS is recognized by the Province of Nova Scotia as the organization that represents Nova Scotia’s ATV c
