This past weekend members of the Marine Riders ATV Club volunteered their time to help out the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation at their 13th Annual Trail Ride and Drive. This year it was held at the Dollar Lake Provincial Park in Wyses Corner.

The Marine Riders helped ferry supplies around the park on their ATVs and Side by Sides, managed parking for all the attendees and their trailers as well as patrolled the park and gave assistance where needed. This was a unique opportunity to ride alongside our 4 hooved friends and see the sites at the beautiful Dollar Lake Provincial Park.

Many thanks go out to Suzanne Killen (and the rest of her team) at NSEF for putting together such a wonderful event and inviting the Marine Riders along once again. The Marine Riders look forward to being a part of this event again next year.

Trails are currently closed due to trail repairs and upgrades, see attached maps.

Users are advised not to use the trails until the closure is lifted, the club is doing repairs and upgrades which will require time to dry out and firm up before it can be used.

Notifications will be sent out when the trails are reopened.

For decades clubs have worked tirelessly across Nova Scotia to create an interconnected trail network. The government of Nova Scotia today tabled a bill with provisions that will help us achieve this goal in two important and specific areas. The Ogden Round Lake Wilderness area has blocked connectivity in Guysbough County since it was designated in the 1990’s.

In Cumberland County the Portapique River Wilderness Area cut off a major OHV/ Snowmobile trail and bridge known locally as the swinging bridge trail. ATVANS and SANS have worked together to ensure government was aware of the importance of both trails to our members.

Amendments to the acts today allow for the Minister to enter into agreements with ATVANS and SANS to manage trails in these two WPA’s that will resolve longstanding local issues and restore OHV use on these two trials.

We continued to meet with staff and Ministers to ensure they are aware of our issues and concerns. Today’s actions by the minister are the fruit of our labour and hard work. We thank the minister for his openness and positive response to our concerns.

“ATVANS supports the organized responsible use of all terrain vehicles and we applaud the government for helping us create a culture of responsible OHV use on managed trails in Nova Scotia while respecting and protecting the environment “said Kevin Lombard President of ATVANS

    ATVANS SMALL GRANTS AVAILABLE 2019

Each year ATVANS manages the ATVANS Small Project grant program. This year $100,000 has been set aside for small local projects. Clubs can apply for up to $5000 per project with matching funds or in-kind labour. This program is administered by Corey Robar (trails coordinator) and has oversight from the ATVANS trails committee.

Clubs should contact Corey prior to starting any work to see if their project is eligible. This program is an important tool for building and maintaining our trail network. For more details contact Corey Robar at trails@atvans.org.  All unused funds are not carried forward.

The Coastal Riders ATV Club recently held a Claude Martell Memorial Fun Run in L’Ardoise on February 23, 2019. The $1600 raised was equally divided and presented by Marie Prout, club president, and members of Claude’s family earlier this week. The recipients were Grand River Volunteer Fire Department, L’Ardoise Legion Army Cadets, St. Peter’s Silver Dart Air Cadets, Adult Drop-in Center lunch fund, L’Ardoise Social Action, St. Peter’s and Area Food Bank, EREC Breakfast fund and Richmond Academy Breakfast fund.

We would like to thank everyone who donated either monetarily or by volunteering their time. Weather permitting the run will take place again next year. (Photo credit to JoePop Images)

    Thanks,
    Marie
